My designs

Styling wise I wanted to keep hair and make-up simple but edgy so opted for a dark black bowl cut and red lipstick for dramatic effect.

Sourcing Materials

I took a trip to a selection of fabric stores around London. I began to assemble my fabrics based on the . colourways introuduced through my design extraction which was predominately from Michael Parson's work which showed highlights of gold/yellow, black, reds and generally warm colours.

Beginning design extraction

I found initial inspiration from the twisted word from a number of artists and through my own experimentation. The experimentation was meant be quick and putting ideas down on paper to show future development into garments.

My own Experimentation with light

I created these using a low shutter speed on my camera and waving glow sticks. The effect was a twisted mass of light and gave an impression of the work by Michael Parsons who was my initial inspiration. From this I will take creativity from the mixing of colours and the use of bright lurid colours. Ill also use hints of yellow in future designs.

This work by Sophia Horton uses knitting to question boundaries, expectations, and site and area.  I liked the use of the fibres and lurid colouring which contrasted vividly with the dull mundane nature of the natural surroundings. I particularly liked the two trees wrapped in red and black knitting. The colours together are very striking as they stand adjacent. I would like to incorporate highlights of red and black within my design pieces and use areas of knitting or twisted fabrics.

These twisted light pieces by Michael Parsons are very beautiful. I like the fact the piece is physically fleeting only captured by photograph.  The smooth swift nature of the lines of light is also of inspiration to design and drawing of line.  My experimentation into movement of light inspired me to use bright colouring in my final designs along with design extraction carried out which assessed my colourways.

Additionally I looked at work by Dan Flavin who uses neon lights within his art. I liked the simple clean lines created by his piece. In this work particularly I felt inspired by the woven nature of the design and created a weave to replicate this. This work additionally helped me with my design extraction.

Shape realization/ experimentation

Groups were formed into 6 people. We were paired on the word we were given which for our group was twisted. We made patterns from paper and two from calico from a pattern assigned to our group which represented the word twisted effectively. The brown paper version was stapled/ glued, the first calico version was hand sewn and the other machine sewn we learnt about shape and forming a wearable piece incorporating different methods of producing the pieces. I worked with another group member specifically on the hand sewn piece.
